CITIZEN TRAFFIC COMPLAINT LEADS TO PURSUIT AND ARREST

GRAND COUNTY, CO- On September 27, 2025, at approximately 5:16 p.m. the Grand County Communications Center received a report of a reckless driver in a silver BMW driving southbound on US Highway 34 near Mile Marker 7 that was speeding, making bad passes and almost caused a head on collision.

A Granby Police Officer responded to the area of US Highway 34 and County Road 61 and attempted to make a traffic stop by using his lights and siren, however the vehicle accelerated and failed to stop. A Grand County Sheriff’s Office Deputy then initiated a vehicle pursuit. The suspect’s vehicle continued through the Granby area and then made a left onto US Highway 40 and continued eastbound at speeds of excess of 112 miles per hour in a posted 60 mile per hour zone while kicking up sand, dust and gravel, and recklessly passing other vehicles on the shoulder. Upon entering the construction zone near Mile Post 217, the suspect’s vehicle was forced to slow down due to other traffic. The suspect slammed on his breaks and then made a U-turn and began traveling westbound on US Highway 40, where he then slammed on his breaks again. A Deputy attempted to stop the vehicle’s movement with the intent to conduct a high-risk traffic stop. The suspect’s vehicle was able to accelerate and continue westbound on US Highway 40 at speeds of excess of 112 miles per hour in a posted 45 mile per hour zone.

A Granby Police Officer attempted to utilize tire deflation devices, however the suspect’s vehicle was able to maneuver around them. The suspect’s vehicle was then forced to slow due to other traffic at which time a Deputy was able to utilize a push bar and stop the vehicle on the shoulder of the road. The driver was subsequently taken into custody.

The adult male driver, later identified as Alexis Juarez Mendez, age 25 from Westminster, Colorado, and was subsequently taken into custody without further incident. While Deputies were in contact with Alexis they could detect the odor of an unknown alcoholic beverage on his breath and other indicia of alcohol usage.

Alexis was booked into the Grand County Jail on three active arrest warrants out of Jefferson and Arapahoe Counties, Vehicular Eluding, DUI, Driving Under Revoked License, and other traffic offenses.

Sheriff Brett Schroetlin emphasized, “Once again, one driver’s decisions have had a significant impact on our community and put other motorists at risk. Mr. Mendez’s ongoing criminal behavior and lack of willingness to follow the rule of law is evident and he must be held accountable within our judicial system.”

These charges are only accusations based on probable cause, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

This incident is completely unrelated to the residence break in call in the Winter Park Highlands neighborhood.
