SEARCH AND RESCUE RECOVERY ON ARIKAREE PEAK
GRAND COUNTY, CO- On October 3, 2024, the Grand County Sheriff’s Office and Grand County Search and Rescue were assisted by a specialized team from Teton County, Wyoming Search and Rescue and were able to successfully recover the body of the hiker that had fallen approximately 300 – 400 feet off of Arikaree Peak into Grand County on August 28, 2024.
This specialized rescue team offered additional equipment and technical expertise and consisted of members of Teton County Search and Rescue and the National Park Service, Grand Teton National Park. They were able to safely navigate the difficult terrain that had posed a challenge to previous recovery efforts.
Sheriff Brett Schroetlin expressed, “My thanks to our partner agencies including Grand County Search and Rescue, Grand County Coroner’s Office, Colorado Search and Rescue, Boulder County, Rocky Mountain Rescue Group, Alpine Rescue Team, the Colorado Army National Guard, Med Evac, Teton County Search and Rescue, National Park Service, and the United States Forest Service for their diligence in safely recovering the decedent and returning him to his family while weighing the importance of rescuer and responder safety.
The deceased subject has been transferred to the custody of the Grand County Coroner who will release the identity and cause/manner of death when appropriate.
