SHERIFF RESPONDS TO DISTRICT ATTORNEY’S CASE FILING

GRAND COUNTY, CO- Today, October 30, 2023, the Grand County Sheriff’s Office was advised of the findings from the 14th Judicial District Attorney’s Office in regards to the deputy misconduct case from the incident that took place on August 20, 2023. As released by the District Attorney’s Office, Dustin Barbee has been charged with Assault in the Third Degree, False Imprisonment, Official Oppression and First Degree Official Misconduct.  All charges are misdemeanors. According to the District Attorney’s Office, the investigation regarding the second Deputy’s involvement in this incident is ongoing and a decision is expected in November.

Dustin Barbee is presumed innocent unless and until his guilt is established in court beyond reasonable doubt.

With this recent finding and the pending judicial proceedings, the Sheriff’s Office is unable to comment any further about the specifics of this incident. It is imperative for all involved that the integrity of our judicial process be maintained.

Sheriff Brett Schroetlin thanks the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and the 14th Judicial District Attorney’s Office for their professionalism and assistance with this investigation. Their independent investigations into this matter ensured that the case was thoroughly and impartially investigated which is evident with the facts that have now been presented.

Dustin Barbee currently remains on unpaid administrative leave pending further termination proceedings.

Sheriff Brett Schroetlin stated, “These findings are very troubling for our entire Grand County community as we all collectively put our trust in our law enforcement officers. While these allegations are extremely serious, they are reflective of a single event; will not be tolerated and are not consistent with the culture and expectations set here at the Grand County Sheriff’s Office.”
