SHERIFF’S OFFICE WELCOMES K9 FREYA
GRAND COUNTY, CO- The Grand County Sheriff’s Office is pleased to announce the newest addition of K9 Freya to our K9 unit. K9 Freya has been partnered with her new handler, Deputy Tyler Mathis.
K9 Freya is a 2 ½ year old Belgian Malinois single purpose narcotics detection dog. She was initially trained at The Next Level Canine Institute in Lapoint, Utah, and started her career at the Gunnison County Sheriff’s Office. On July 9, 2023, the Grand County Sheriff’s Office purchased K9 Freya from the Gunnison County Sheriff’s Office as their department needs had changed.
Prior to joining the Grand County Sheriff’s Office in December, 2021, Deputy Mathis previously worked for the Iowa State Patrol for a year and a half. Deputy Mathis has also actively served in the Iowa Army National Guard for the last twelve years.
Deputy Mathis and K9 Freya have been working hard training together and learning how to work as a team. On September 6, 2023, K9 Freya was certified for narcotics detection through High Desert Police K9 Association. K9 Freya loves playing tug with her handler, running around, and taking car trips to get Pumpkin Spiced Lattes.
Sheriff Brett Schroetlin stated, “I am very excited to announce the addition of K9 Freya to our K9 Unit. Adding K9 Freya will provide an additional tool for law enforcement to use to combat illegal narcotics and continue to keep the Grand County community safe.”
