[ARCHIVED] Sheriff's Commitment to Transparency Leads to Independent Investigation

Sheriff's Commitment to Transparency Leads to Independent Investigation 9-5-2023

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SHERIFF’S COMMITMENT TO TRANSPARENCY LEADS TO INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATION

GRAND COUNTY, CO- On August 20, 2023, two Grand County Sheriff’s Office Deputies responded to a call regarding an unwanted subject at a private residence within the Town of Grand Lake. Upon arrival, the Deputies conducted an investigation and chose to arrest an adult female. During the arrest process an altercation occurred between the Deputies and female arrestee. The female was subsequently taken into custody and transported to the Grand County Jail.

An initial review by Sheriff’s Office Supervisors revealed some concerns regarding how this incident was handled and Sheriff’s Office Command Staff determined that an independent investigation was necessary to determine the factual basis of this incident. On August 22, 2023, the two Deputies that were involved in this incident were placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

The third-party, independent investigation into this matter is two-fold: the Colorado Bureau of Investigation will be conducting the criminal investigation and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office will be conducting the administrative investigation.

We rely on these independent investigations to ensure a fair, transparent and accountable response to critical incidents involving our deputies. We are committed to this and hold our agency to high standards. At the conclusion of the criminal investigation the findings will be presented to the 14th Judicial District Attorney’s Office for review. The administrative investigation findings will be returned to the Grand County Sheriff’s Office for review of any applicable policy violations.

Grand County Sheriff Brett Schroetlin stated, “As your elected Sheriff, the citizens of Grand County place their public trust in me, which in turn I extend to the Deputies that serve our community. I take these matters seriously, which is why I initiated an immediate review of the incident. At the conclusion of these investigations we will review the factual basis surrounding this incident and critical decisions will be made.”
