SUSPECT CHARGED AND CRAIG POLICE OFFICER CLEARED FOLLOWING INDEPENDENT CIRT INVESTIGATION INTO OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING
GRAND COUNTY, CO- On April 26, 2025, an Officer with the Craig Police Department responded to a residence within Craig, Colorado, on a report of a suicidal male with a gun. A Sergeant with the Craig Police Department responded to this location, and upon his arrival, a subsequent Officer Involved Shooting occurred, resulting in injuries to the male subject. The Sergeant, additional responding Deputies/Officers, and any other citizens were not injured.
In accordance with Colorado Law, the 14th Judicial Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) was activated. The CIRT is comprised of Law Enforcement Officers from the 14th Judicial District (Grand, Routt, and Moffat Counties), the 14th District Attorney’s Office, and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The Grand County Sheriff’s Office was designated as the lead investigative agency for this incident.
At the conclusion of the investigation, the case was presented to the 14th Judicial District Attorney for review. On July 11, 2025, an Arrest Warrant was issued for Troy Wade Curtis (Age 36) from Craig, Colorado, in relation to this incident for violations of Colorado Revised Statute (CRS) 18-3-206 Menacing (Class 5 Felony); CRS 18-12-107.5(1)(3) Illegal Discharge of a Firearm (Class 5 Felony); and CRS 18-12-112(3)(a)(9)(a) Private Firearms Transfer- Background Check Required (Class 2 Misdemeanor). Mr. Curtis turned himself into the Moffat County Jail on July 11, 2025 and was later released on a $5000 PR Bond. Note: These charges are merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
On behalf of 14th Judicial District Attorney Matt Karzen, the Grand County Sheriff’s Office is hereby releasing the attached conclusion letter, which details the DA’s Office review of this incident and his determination that Craig Police Sergeant Dalton Caudell acted in accordance with Colorado Law, and was justified in his use of force during this incident.
