SUSPECT IN GRAND COUNTY PURSUIT LATER APPREHENDED IN GARFIELD COUNTY

GRAND COUNTY, CO – On Wednesday, May 21, 2025, at approximately 1:09 p.m. a Grand County Sheriff’s Office Deputy was dispatched to the Adams Tunnel located at 100 Tunnel Access Road in Grand Lake in reference to a suspicious person/vehicle (a black Jaguar) that was parked in a no parking area. The male occupant of the vehicle was seen on surveillance video pulling on the doors to the tunnel and urinating. The Deputy arrived on scene and contacted the male subject who was identified as Caleb Perry, a twenty-nine-year-old male from Illinois. Perry was cooperative and subsequently released on scene with a warning for trespassing.

At approximately 2:22 p.m. a Grand County Sheriff’s Office Sergeant contacted Perry driving the black Jaguar near the intersection of Highway 34 and Highway 40 in unincorporated Grand County, near the Town of Granby. The reason for this contact was that a citizen had reported a complaint of reckless driving; specifically reporting that he was driving an estimated 80 miles per hour in a posted 50 mile per hour zone and passing on a double yellow line. While the Sergeant was in contact with Perry, a second citizen stopped and reported additional passing violations that had occurred on Highway 34. While the Sergeant was preparing a citation for these traffic violations, Perry suddenly sped away nearly causing a collision on the Highway as he fled the parking lot. Two additional Sheriff’s Office Deputies were in the area and initiated a pursuit of the fleeing vehicle as the vehicle continued east bound on Highway 40 into Granby. A Sheriff’s Deputy clocked Perry’s speed at 112 miles per hour in the posted 30 miles per hour zone near the intersection of 5th Street and East Agate Avenue (Highway 40).

As with all vehicular pursuits, law enforcement officers and supervisors are tasked with constantly evaluating varying circumstances and the safety of the public, the offender and involved Deputies and deciding whether to continue or discontinue the pursuit. Based on Perry’s driving behavior, coupled with the fact that Deputies had already confirmed his identity, the pursuit was discontinued for safety reasons and Deputies intentions were to seek an Arrest Warrant for Perry in relation to this incident.

Later in the day on May 21, the Sheriff’s Office learned that Perry had also been involved in a vehicle pursuit with the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office and had subsequently been taken into custody following their pursuit. Perry had been booked in the Garfield County Jail for Vehicular Eluding, Reckless Driving, Speeding, and Passing on Left Where Prohibited.

On May 22, a Grand County Sheriff’s Office Sergeant prepared an Arrest Warrant for Perry in relation to the traffic stop/pursuit from May 21 in Grand County for Colorado Revised Statute CRS 18-9-116.5 Vehicular Eluding (Class 5 Felony); CRS 42-4-1401 Reckless Driving; CRS 42-4-1101 Speeding (82 miles per hour over the speed limit); CRS 42-4-1005 Passed on Left When Not Clear to Traffic; CRS 42-4-1005 Passed on Left When Prohibited. The Sergeant then contacted Garfield County to advise them of the additional active Arrest Warrant for Perry.

These charges are only accusations based on probable cause, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
