TWO IN CUSTODY FOLLOWING VEHICLE PURSUIT & BARRICADED SUBJECT

GRAND COUNTY, CO- On Monday, July 15, 2024, at approximately 7:22 a.m. the Grand County Communications Center received a report of a stolen black F-150 truck that had just occurred in the area of Lake Granby. Initial reports were that this vehicle was traveling south-bound on Highway 34 approaching the Granby area. A Granby Police Officer attempted to make a traffic stop on the vehicle by using his lights and siren in the Town of Granby jurisdiction, however the vehicle accelerated and failed to stop. Grand County Sheriff’s Office Deputies took over the pursuit as it continued east-bound on Highway 40. The pursuit reached speeds that were up to approximately 100 miles-per-hour before deputies were able to perform a Tactical Vehicle Intervention technique on Highway 40 near Mile Post 237 (Berthoud Pass).

The subject resisted, ultimately colliding with two Sheriff’s Office patrol vehicles as he further attempted to escape. Deputies were then able to prevent the vehicle from continuing further, however the driver attempted to flee on foot and was quickly apprehended and placed into custody. The driver was evaluated by Grand County Emergency Medical Services on scene and transported to Middle Park Medical Center for further evaluation and then transported to the Grand County Jail. The deputies were uninjured.

While this pursuit was unfolding, the Grand County Sheriff’s Office received additional information that a secondary subject related to this incident was known to be in a red dodge truck in the parking lot of the Lake View Conoco at the entrance to Grand Lake and that the subject was possibly armed with a weapon. Deputies responded to this location and located the vehicle in question. This vehicle was occupied by an adult male, who failed to comply with orders to exit the vehicle. Deputies attempted to work for approximately 50 minutes to get the subject to safely exit the vehicle and were eventually successful in taking him into custody. During this time for community safety, traffic was stopped in both directions on Highway 34 at the entrance to Grand Lake.

Both of these incidents were confirmed to be related and there is no ongoing public safety threat. A complex, ongoing investigation is underway and to maintain the integrity of the investigation, no further information is able to be released at this time.

We recognize that both of these incidents impacted morning commutes for many and we appreciate everyone’s patience as we work to keep the community safe. The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Granby Police Department, Fraser Winter Park Police Department, Grand County Emergency Medical Services, Grand Lake Fire Protection District, and Rocky Mountain National Park Rangers.
