DEPUTY TYLER MATHIS RECOGNIZED AS LAW ENFORCEMENT CHAMPION

GRAND COUNTY, CO – On Wednesday, May 8, 2024, Deputy Tyler Mathis was recognized for his outstanding individual dedication to impaired driving enforcement at the Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) Law Enforcement Champion Awards for the Western Slope and Mountain regions at Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction.

This annual event celebrates and recognizes law enforcement officers and agencies who provide outstanding support for impaired driving and occupant protection enforcement. A law enforcement champion is an individual that shows outstanding support for impaired driving, traffic safety or occupant protection enforcement. This can be demonstrated by the number of dangerous drivers removed from roadways, drug recognition expert activity, high visibility enforcement tactics and other related activities.

Deputy Tyler Mathis’s exceptional commitment to driving under the influence (DUI) enforcement in Grand County is evident in his dedicated and consistent willingness to work overtime DUI shifts and diligence in making traffic stops to support and increase public safety throughout the Grand County community. In 2023, Deputy Tyler Mathis made approximately 641 traffic stops, issued 486 citations and was the arresting officer in 36 DUI cases.

Prior to joining the Grand County Sheriff’s Office in early 2022, Deputy Mathis was deployed overseas as a Staff Sergeant in the Iowa Army National Guard. Tyler remains active in the Iowa Army National Guard Reserves and attends drill one weekend a month and Annual Training for two weeks every summer.

Deputy Mathis has continued to take on increased responsibility with his specialized assignment as a K9 Handler partnered with a single purpose narcotics detection dog named Freya. As a K9 Handler in our smaller agency, deputies are still responsible for responding to routine patrol calls for service in addition to balancing continual k9 training and k9 deployments. His steadfast and reliable work ethic are undeniable and highly deserving of this honorable recognition.
