  • Many workers in the tourism industry face barriers to employment due to the lack of housing near their workplace, while others are unable to work as many hours due to the high cost of child care. Dedicating funds to these areas would help local businesses serving tourists by supporting the workforce in the areas many need it the most.

  • At this time, the BOCC is considering the following allocation, based on the needs in the community:

    • No less than 50% dedicated to continued tourism marketing
    • No less than 30% to support other uses allowed by state legislation, such as housing, childcare, and other services that would enhance visitor experiences
    • About 20% would remain flexible to address specific needs each year.

The allocation of this flexible 20% would be determined each year through a public process of calculating annual revenues, assessing local needs, hearing from residents and stakeholders, and making a final decision by December for the ensuing year.

  • Grand County’s tourism organizations would continue to receive the same amount of funding for their marketing and visitor experience expenses. Depending on how much revenue is generated through the increased tax each year, there may actually be more money available. By leaving about 20% undefined, there is the added flexibility to help the tourism industry where it is feeling the most pressure and needs additional support.
