[ARCHIVED] Grand County warns community of potential flooding in Fraser River Valley

Pile of sand and sandbagging station at Granby Road and Bridge shop

May 30, 2024 - Grand County’s Office of Emergency Management is advising residents and visitors that the Fraser River and its tributaries will see increased streamflows beginning today, and flooding is possible in lower lying areas throughout the Fraser Valley and parts of the Granby area.

The Fraser River is expected to increase 50 to 75 cubic feet per second (CFS) daily beginning today as a result of prolonged spring runoff season combined with warmer temperatures and constraints on the Moffat Collection System.

Property owners in low lying areas along the Fraser River should prepare now for potential flooding. Sand bagging stations will be at three locations:

  • Winter Park Public Works (80500 US Highway 40, Winter Park)
  • Grand County Road and Bridge / Fraser shop (350 County Road 5103, Fraser) – Sand pile and bagging station is located on the south side of the fence just west of the fuel farm.
  • Grand County Road and Bridge / Granby shop (467 E. Topaz Ave., Granby) – Sand pile and bagging station is located in the parking lot behind the Department of Natural Resources building.

Residents need to bring their own sand bags and shovels. Sand bags can be purchased at local hardware stores, including Fraser Valley Ace Hardware, Country Ace Hardware and Murdoch’s Ranch & Home Supply in Fraser. Each sandbag station will be stocked with shovels, however, residents should also bring a shovel in case one is not available at the station.

Those recreating on and along rivers and streams are encouraged to exercise extreme caution:

  • Stay alert and informed. Higher flows can create strong currents – even in areas that are normally calm. Unstable river banks, unpredictable storms and quickly changing conditions are to be expected.
  • Avoid flooded areas. Do not attempt to drive through flooded roads or areas. Learn more about being Flood Ready.

Residents and visitors are encouraged to sign up for CodeRED to receive emergency notifications. Notifications are sent via text message, phone call and email.

Current information about streamflows and flooding will be shared on the County’s Facebook pages (Grand County Gov, Grand County Sheriff and Grand County OEM), and also at GCEmergency.com.
